Three months later, on August 31, 2024, the API shut down for good. If that left you staring at failing requests and searching for IEX Cloud alternatives, this guide is for you.

Losing a data provider hurts more than most outages. It’s not a bug you can patch – it’s a working pipeline, tested code, a budget planned around a price sheet, all orphaned at once. And IEX Cloud deserves a kind word on the way out. It was a genuinely developer-friendly market data API that introduced a lot of people to this space, and its retirement wasn’t a scandal: the product was under 2% of IEX Group’s revenue and had been operating at a loss. Sometimes good products end for boring reasons.

Departing customers were referred to Intrinio under an official referral agreement, and Intrinio is a solid landing spot for many (more on them below). But a forced migration is also a rare chance to re-pick your vendor with fresh eyes. So here’s a calm, practical rundown: why this one is personal for us, what actually shut down, what to look for in a replacement, and an honest tour of the options – including where we think Tiingo fits and where it doesn’t.

Why this one hits close to home for us

Some history, because it’s genuinely ours: Tiingo was the first accessible API to promote and distribute IEX data. At the time, IEX had only about 1.4-1.7% market share, and it wasn’t even an exchange yet – it was still an ATS. Supporting the accessible venue that early was a decision based on experience: when a company does what it can to be supportive and transformative in a kind way, I’ve found I want to work with them, I need to work with them. It’s what our mission is: making high-end data accessible and affordable, and we’ve been doing it since 2014. We did the same thing again in 2026 with the Blue Ocean API, opening overnight data to individuals while Blue Ocean was still the young, accessible venue.

Our motto is “Actively Do Good.” We mean it literally. Impact comes first, and money is the means, never the point – revenue exists so we can keep making high-end data accessible to more people, not the other way around. The question behind everything we ship is “how much can we give and get away with it?” instead of “how much can we charge and get away with it.” (If you’re rolling your eyes a little at that, all good. It’s still how we run the place.)

IEX helped us do exactly that. IEX market data carries no license fee, and that helped us keep costs low for everyone. Less money spent on licensing is more data we can give away.

So when IEX Cloud retired, it felt personal. Different products, same data source, same community of developers.

It also sharpened the question this whole article exists to answer: “will my provider disappear underneath me?” So let me answer it for us, plainly. Tiingo has raised not a dollar of venture funding, and we’ve been profitable for 8+ years. That’s sustainable disruption – not growth-at-all-costs, not a land-grab that gets repriced once the investors want their returns. A business that funds itself doesn’t have to shut down a product just because it’s a small slice of revenue. That’s no knock on IEX Group – their reasons were legitimate, and we understand them. It’s simply why we built Tiingo so that math never has to happen to you.

That independence is also why we can put promises in writing. Our Developer Program commits to at least one year’s notice before any breaking change, and we’re the oldest accessible retail market-data API still around. We can’t promise the future to anyone (nobody can – that’s the honest lesson of IEX Cloud). What we can promise is that you’ll never wake up to a three-month countdown.

IEX Cloud vs. the IEX Exchange: what actually shut down

This distinction confused a lot of people, so let’s clear it up.

IEX Cloud was the developer-facing data subsidiary – the REST API, the dashboards, the pay-as-you-go plans. That is what closed on August 31, 2024.

The IEX Exchange is a stock exchange, and it continues to operate normally. Orders still route to it, trades still print on it, and its market data still flows to providers who distribute it (ourselves included). If you read a headline that sounded like “IEX shut down,” only the data product ended. The exchange is fine.

What to look for in an IEX Cloud replacement

Before comparing logos and price pages, it helps to know what actually matters when you migrate a market data API. Six things, in rough order of how often they bite people later:

Licensing and redistribution rights. Can you legally show the data to your users, or only to yourself? This is the difference between a personal license and a commercial one, and it’s the fine print that sinks projects after they launch. Ask before you build.

Where the real-time data actually comes from. “Real-time” can mean a direct exchange feed, a consolidated feed, or something delayed and relabeled. Ask which venue the quotes come from and whether exchange fees apply on top of the subscription.

History depth. Backtests live or die on this. Twenty years of daily bars is fine for some strategies; others need every regime back to the 1960s. Know your requirement before you compare.

A free tier you can actually evaluate with. A sandbox with demo tickers tells you the API works. A real free tier tells you whether the data is any good. You want to check corporate actions, weird tickers, and your own edge cases before money changes hands.

Honest pricing. Flat rates are easy to reason about. Credit systems and per-call metering can be fair too, but do the math on your actual usage pattern, not the marketing page’s example.

Vendor commitment. The lesson of this whole episode. How long has the provider been around? Is the data business their core business or a side project? And if something must change, how much notice would you get before a breaking change? Ask this question directly. The answer is revealing.

With that lens on, here are the options.

The IEX Cloud alternatives worth knowing

Tiingo

That’s us – the story of why this one is personal lives up top, so here’s the practical picture. Coverage spans 80,000+ assets (US equities, ETFs, mutual funds, Chinese A-shares), with end-of-day history back to 1962, 20+ years of fundamentals, 70M+ news articles, real-time US equities via IEX, crypto across 150+ exchanges, and forex on 140+ pairs. The free Starter tier is $0 for 500 unique symbols/month, 50 requests/hour, 1,000 requests/day, and 1GB of bandwidth/month, with 30+ years of price history and 5 years of fundamentals – enough to run a real evaluation on real tickers, not demo data. Power is a flat $30/month ($300/year) for individuals, and Commercial is $50/month ($499/year) with a commercial-use license, because we’d rather make redistribution rights clear and affordable than bury them in a sales call. The fair caveat: our equities coverage centers on the US plus Chinese A-shares. If you need dozens of international exchanges directly, look at Twelve Data or EODHD below.

Intrinio

The official referral partner – IEX Cloud pointed departing customers here, and Intrinio offered to match them to a similar plan at a similar price. Their genuine strength is deep, standardized US fundamentals (an ML-based XBRL standardizer that usually has data ready about 30 minutes after an SEC filing) plus options data, including real-time OPRA. Real-time equities come via IEX, Nasdaq Basic, or OPRA, with exchange fees on higher tiers, and history runs 50+ years on prices and 15+ years on fundamentals. The tradeoffs: it’s US-centric (US fundamentals plus roughly 1,500 ADRs), there’s no permanent free tier (a sandbox and trial only), and entry pricing starts at $150/month for individuals, with Startup at $333/month (phasing toward $999) and Enterprise from $1,250+/month.

Alpha Vantage

Impressive breadth: US and global coverage across 100,000+ symbols, fundamentals, news with sentiment, crypto, forex, options, 50+ technical indicators, and economic indicators. The free tier is now 25 requests/day (it used to be 500), which is enough to learn the API but tight for real evaluation. Premium is priced on request rate: $49.99/month for 75 requests/minute, stepping up through $99.99, $149.99, and $199.99 to $249.99/month for 1,200/minute, and both real-time and 15-minute-delayed data require premium. Daily history goes back 20+ years; intraday history is shallow, which matters if you backtest intraday strategies.

Twelve Data

A strong pick if global coverage is your priority: 90+ exchanges across 50+ countries, spanning stocks, ETFs, fundamentals, indices, forex, and crypto, with roughly 30 years of history. The free Basic tier is genuinely usable – 8 credits/minute, 800/day, with real-time US data for non-display use. Paid plans are Grow from $29/month, Pro from $99, and Ultra from $329. The fair caveat is the credit system itself: different endpoints cost different credits, which is harder to reason about than plain request counts. Model your real usage before committing.

EOD Historical Data (EODHD)

The value play for global end-of-day data: 60-70+ exchanges, 150,000+ tickers, 30+ years of history, plus US options. All-World end-of-day is $19.99/month, EOD+Intraday $29.99, Fundamentals $59.99, and All-In-One $99.99 – honest, modest pricing across the board. Two caveats: the free tier (20 calls/day) only covers demo tickers, so you can’t truly evaluate the data without paying, and real-time WebSocket streams and options are paid add-ons rather than bundled.

Financial Modeling Prep (FMP)

Built for fundamentals-driven work: full statements, ratios, DCF models, 13F filings, and earnings-call transcripts, alongside US and global equities (tier-gated), crypto, forex, and commodities. No options data. The free tier is 250 calls/day of end-of-day US data – workable for a real evaluation. Paid starts at $22/month (Starter), then $59 (Premium) and $149 (Ultimate) at annual-billed rates, with real-time from the first paid tier. Watch the history depth: Starter gets 5 years, while 30+ years requires Premium or Ultimate.

Nasdaq Data Link (formerly Quandl)

Many developers still call it Quandl – Nasdaq acquired it in 2018 and rebranded it to Nasdaq Data Link in 2021, and the platform lives on. Set expectations correctly, though: this is a marketplace of datasets (core financial data plus a deep bench of third-party alternative and economic data), not a single real-time price feed, so it’s not a drop-in IEX Cloud replacement. Where it shines is that catalog depth, with free public datasets alongside premium subscriptions and tidy Python, R, and Excel libraries. Pricing is per-dataset, so there’s no single number to quote here.

Xignite (now part of QUODD)

Xignite was acquired by QUODD in 2023 (xignite.com now redirects to quodd.com), and the combined offering is squarely enterprise: 500+ REST APIs across real-time, delayed, and historical data, multi-asset, with institutional-grade breadth and SLAs. If you’re a firm that needs contractual guarantees, this is a serious option. Pricing is quote-based with no public self-serve tiers, so individual developers and small projects should look elsewhere – not because the product is bad, but because it isn’t built for that use case.

Bloomberg

The institutional benchmark, and it earns the title on depth and coverage. Programmatic access runs through BLPAPI: the Desktop API requires a Bloomberg Terminal login, while Server API (SAPI) and B-PIPE are separately licensed enterprise feeds – so in practice, individual API access means paying for a Terminal. Bloomberg publishes no official pricing, but third-party estimates put a Terminal at roughly $2,000-$2,700/month per seat (about $24k-$32k/year), usually on a two-year contract. If your firm already has Terminals, the API access may effectively be sitting there waiting. If not, the math is hard to justify for a data feed alone.

At a glance

Provider

Free tier

Real-time

Global stocks

Entry price

Best for

Tiingo

$0 – 500 symbols/mo, 1,000 req/day

Yes (IEX)

US + China A-shares

$30/mo flat

Flat-rate US data with deep history

Intrinio

Sandbox + trial only

Yes (IEX / Nasdaq Basic / OPRA, higher tiers)

Thin (US + ~1,500 ADRs)

$150/mo

US fundamentals + options

Alpha Vantage

$0 – 25 req/day

Premium only

Yes (100,000+ symbols)

$49.99/mo

Broad prototyping

Twelve Data

$0 – 800 req/day

Yes (US, non-display)

Yes (90+ exchanges)

From $29/mo

Global coverage on a budget

EODHD

$0 – 20 calls/day, demo tickers

Paid add-on

Yes (60-70+ exchanges)

$19.99/mo

Affordable global end-of-day

FMP

$0 – 250 calls/day (EOD, US)

From first paid tier

Yes (tier-gated)

$22/mo (annual)

Fundamentals-driven analysis

Nasdaq Data Link

Free public datasets

Not a live price feed

Varies by dataset

Per-dataset

Alternative + economic datasets

Xignite (QUODD)

No

Yes

Yes (multi-asset)

Quote-based

Enterprise feeds with SLAs

Bloomberg

No

Yes

Yes

~$2,000-$2,700/mo (est.)

Institutional everything

The bottom line

Migrating a market data API is annoying.
